X-Project
The X-Project (X計画) was the name of a recurring feature in Comic BomBom involving a series of fan-made Medarot (or "Ori-Meda") contests. The winning entries became official Medarots and appeared in several Medarot games and manga. In-universe, the "X-Project" was tied heavily to the "X Medals" in the Medarotter Rintarou and Medarot R manga series by Fujioka Kenki.
Medarot Navi featured the most X-Project Medarots and labeled some by putting an -X suffix on their model numbers. Rather than being fan-submitted, many of the Medarots were suggested or designed by other artists in Comic BomBom and modified by Fujioka Kenki to match the game's art style.
Some X Medarots, such as Tyrrellbeetle, were designed using elements from several fan-submitted Medarots.

The X-Project produced Medarots for Medarot 2, 4, Navi, 5, G, and the manga series.

Although it wasn't called the X-Project at the time, the arm parts for these Medarots were designed as part of the "Original Parts Contest Grand Prix" (オリジナルパーツコンテストグランプリ) where readers were asked to design arm parts for Metabee to equip in the Medarotter Rintarou manga series. The names of the Medarotters who use them in the game (Hitoshi and Kazuki respectively) may be a reference to the fans who submitted them.

To tie in with the "X-Project" occuring in the story, the magazine requested readers to submit Medarot designs as well as Medarotter versions of themselves to appear in the manga series. Many of these Medarots and characters appeared in the later chapters of the manga (mostly as 1-panel cameos), with most of them being original "custom" KBT and KWG types.
Although Anzu Beetle appeared as an X-Project "custom KBT" in the story, its design was stated to have been contributed by Marukata, who had also contributed Medarot designs for the game version of Medarot R. Its model number included an -X prefix when it made its first game appearance in Medarot Navi.
For Tyrrellbeetle's design, they requested readers to submit KWG-type Medarots that would serve as good counterparts to Arcbeetle that would be incorporated into a final design by Fujioka Kenki.
