Hikaru Agata (アガタ ヒカル Agata Hikaru) is a major character within the Medarot series who first debuted as the player character in Medarot 1. He has the nickname Henry in English-translated Medabots media.
In the games
In Medarot 1
Hikaru is the protagonist of Medarot 1. His adventure begins when his dog Bonaparte finds a Medal in the local park, and shortly thereafter he receives a matching Medarot starter kit from his dad - a Metal Beetle for a Kabuto Medal or a Head Scissors for a Kuwagata Medal, respectively. Thus begins an adventure that takes him near two girls vying for his attention, the spicy tomboy Kirara and Dr. Medarot's homey granddaughter Nae, and ending with him facing down the dangerous weapon Medarot, Beast Master.
In Medarot 2 and 2 Core
Hikaru Agata, now older, works as a convenience store clerk at the Aruaru Konbini Omikuji Town Store to pay for his college education. Due to events in his childhood, he came into contact with Dr. Medarot, who encouraged him to become Phantom Retort, a vigilante thief who steals medals from bad Medarotters to prevent another Ten Days of Darkness. Unexpectedly, Kirara Akita decides to become Retort Lady to assist Hikaru in his mission.
Hikaru is first seen when Ikki Tenryou goes to the market to buy a Retort Curry for dinner. Ikki witnesses Hikaru being scolded by his boss for purchasing expensive parts without permission, as few people in the city would be able to buy them.
When Ikki approaches to ask about the Retort Curry, Hikaru immediately begins offering these parts to him, a Kabuto (Metabee) or Kuwagata (Rokusho) model Medarot. Amid the confusion, Ikki accidentally buys his first Medarot, returning home worried about the scolding he would receive from his mother. This was actually a plan hatched by Hikaru and Dr. Medarot, who chose Ikki as someone who could bring a bright future to the Medarots and arranged for him to get his first Medarot.
Although Ikki had the Tinpet and the parts, he didn't have the most important thing, the medal. It is at this moment that Hikaru uses his alter-ego as Phantom Retort and approaches Jouzou Tenryou, Ikki's father, handing him the Kabuto or Kuwagata Medal to be given to the boy.
Phantom Retort later appears on Mt. Odoro when Ikki is cornered by grunts from the RoboRobo Gang. While Ikki thinks Retort is cool, the grunts mock him as a weirdo, much to Retort's annoyance. Nevertheless, he manages to scare off the villains. Retort reappears in the cave at Odoro Marsh to retrieve the Ghost Medarot for Dr. Medarot to repair.
Kouji Karakuchi, who is present, also thinks Retort is a weirdo and decides to follow him. However, Retort loses him and successfully delivers the Ghost Medarot to Dr. Medarot. He also takes the opportunity to inform Nae Akihabara about the events at Mt. Odoro. When Ikki asks Nae how she knows about these events, she cryptically mentions Hikaru as a "bird" who told her.
Phantom Retort also appears on Medarot Island when a RoboRobo Grunt steals a medal from a girl and Ikki chases after the thief. Once again, the grunt calls Retort a weirdo, which Retort finds rude. Despite this, Retort manages to chase off the grunt, successfully recovering the girl's medal.
In Medarot R
Hikaru has little role as himself in the game, always being in the shop. But he is constantly mentioned by characters as a great Medarotter and his actions in Medarot 1 are recognized to the point that it would become a TV show.
Most of the game he is as his Phantom Retort persona, where Ikki needs to find him hidden in various maps and, every time, Ikki needs to defeat him in Robottle where Retort rewards the boy with a medal. But at the end of chapter 3, Hikaru as himself gives Kuwagata medal to Ikki.
Hikaru's Medarotter data is kept in Professor Medarot's laboratory, which Katekin Ten stole and gave to the RoboRobo Gang who used it to create a robotic copy of Hikaru called Fake Hikaru. RoboRobo Gang also has a member who pretends to be Phantom Retort called Fake Retort. Both fake versions were defeated by Ikki.
He later appears again as Phantom Retort to help Ikki against the Medal God.
He is the rank 1 Medarotter, with Ikki needing to face several opponents to finally be able to face him which uses an Arcbeetle and the original versions of Metabee and Rokusho.
Hikaru appears during the postgame. He is one of the last legacy characters to be recruited into Kasumi's party and, after all this time, still uses Metal Beetle or Head Scissors as his Leader.
In Medarot DUAL
In the Manga
In Medarot
Hikaru is the protagonist of the first Medarot manga. He and Metabee, his Medarot, build together a strong bond and befriended many other characters, including Kirara, Professor Medarot and Rokusho, who eventually are all involved in conflicts against the Roborobo Gang.
After some months having a Medarot, Hikaru is recognized as a high-skilled Medarotter, even though his low age. After having won the city tournament and several other Robottle, he was invited to participate into the World Robottle Cup as Japan's representative. However, during the finals, a rampage battle initiated by the Roborobo Gang puts him in a coma for 3 months. When he wakes up, he realizes that Metabee was destroyed in the battle and it would be virtually impossible to bring him back. However, with the help with his friends, Hikaru found a way and brings Metabee back to life.
In a final battle with Metabee, Rokusho and his other friends, Hikaru is able to stop Roborobo Gang signal from the Select Corps building, setting free all Medals under their control. This event would be known in the future as the Ten Days of Darkness and Hikaru and his friends are recognized as the ones who stopped them. The story ends with Metabee and Hikaru enjoying their time together as regular kids.
In Medarot 2
12 Years Later the previous manga, Hikaru is now an university student who works as a part-time store-clerk. He is still famous due to the rampage 12 years before, as when Mr. Uruchi greets him. He is also the one who sells the KBT Model to Ikki Tenryo, the protagonist of Medarot 2 and shows up eventually in the store or when all the characters are reunited, as in Kouji party.
Hikaru also works with Professor Medarot under the disguise of Phantom Retort. It is because of him that Ikki found his Kabuto Medal, since he left one behind one night before. He is also around protecting the kids against the Roborobo Gang when necessary. Even though his identity is never confirmed in this installment, when Belzelga breaks Hikaru's arm in the last chapters, Retort shows up to Ikki in the next day protecting the same arm, implying he was unable to use it.
Hikaru only used his Medarot once, when Metabee lost control of his own Meda-Force. In that situation, he used a Sekizou. However, it is implied that his Metabee is still around, since he mentioned in the first chapters that his Medarot is very strong.
In Medarot R
Hikaru is portrayed in this installment as the Space Medarotter X. He is investigating the Medal X, a powerful Medal that was originally on the moon. In these volumes, he is shown using his Metabee and a Tyrell Beetle.
In Medarot 3
Hikaru's participation is reduced in this installment, showing up once a few times. Retort's is also rarely seem, only when he was investigating Dr. Hebereke fallen ship and when he released the hostages during the Maquette incident. In the first situation, he went through a fight against the Select Corp and his Metabee, called then "Unit 01", helped him.
In Medarot 4
Retort comes back in this installment and shows his concern regarding the project to contact the Moon Medals. In a disagreement with Ikki, they fight together and Ikki's Metabee is eventually lost in a flood. Feeling guilty because of the incident, Hikaru disappears for a while, until Professor Medarot says that Metabee was found and he should stay around, since it was hard to him to find a place that suits him like there. Eventually, he comes back to the town and to his previous job as store-clerk.
In the Anime
In the first anime, Hikaru plays a similar role to his game counterpart in Medarot 2 and Medarot 2 Core, working at the 24 Hop Mart in the day and battling the Roborobo Gang as the Phantom Retort at night for Dr. Aki, though in the anime, he is known to also steal Rare Medals from locations such as the Medarot Museum. Hikaru initially was a Medarotter that Robottled alongside his original Metal Beetle, but during the World Robottle Tournament that happened before the events of the anime, his Metabee had become the catalyst for the Ten Days of Darkness, Hikaru needing ten days to steel his resolve in order to destroy his Metabee's Rare Medal in order to stop the rampaging Medarots. After the destruction of his Metal Beetle's medal, he would try to restore the Medal, creating Arcbeetle's Medal from the remains, though his original Metal Beetle would be gone.
He would assume a third identity in the anime, Space Medarotter X, in order to continue Robottling with Arcbeetle, though primarily would utilize his Phantom Retort identity when supporting Ikki and his friends.
After the defeat of Dr. Meta-Evil by the hands of Ikki and Metabee, Hikaru would leave the 24 Hop Mart and the town, driving off with his Arcbeetle after his identity as Space Medarotter X was ousted as being the same entity as the Phantom Retort.
Medarot Damashii
Hikaru makes a cameo in the Japanese ending credits for Medarot Damashii.
