:::Pretty sure I pegged the origin, though I hadn't thought of it before: the element they stand for and the first syllable of the elemental of that element (Flame Salamander, Wind Sylph, Earth Gnome, Aqua Undine), with an intervening syllable and a small modification to the elemental name.
