Guide:Medarot 1 Link feature guide
(Written by: Kimbles)
Being the first game in the series, Medarot 1 has a slightly different set of link cable features than the later games. The main differences are:
- Some parts transform when you trade them (like in Pokemon).
- Medals cannot be traded like parts.
- After winning an Official Robottle, the parts that you take from the opponent are selected on a slot machine-like screen that allows you to steal Medals as well as parts.
- Some Medals transform into exclusive and otherwise unobtainable Medals when stolen.
In order to emulate link features on your computer, you'll want to use BGB, a GB/GBC emulator. (Instructions for linking games with it can be found on this page.) It uses regular .sav save files, so you can always switch back to using a different emulator after you're done.
Game compatibility[edit]
The following games can all link with each other:
- Medarot 1 Kabuto Version
- Medarot 1 Kuwagata Version
- Medarot 1 Parts Collection
- Medarot 1 Parts Collection 2
Medarot 2 can also connect with Medarot 1 and the Parts Collections to "transfer" (copy) parts and Medals over, but this is only available after completing Medarot 2 and is handled through a different menu than the regular link features (accessed from the start/continue screen when you start up Medarot 2). It still requires a link cable, but the exact steps of the process on the Medarot 1 side are unknown.
[edit]
The link menu can be accessed from any convenience store in the game by talking to Milky (the witch girl) in the top right corner of the shop. She'll explain the link features the first time you speak to her, but after that she'll just ask if you want to connect, then if you want to save, and then attempt to connect. (You need to be linked to another game when it says "Accessing Robottle HQ" / ロボトルほんぶに アクセスします, or it'll cancel out.)

あそびでロボトル | Practice Robottle |
しんけんロボトル | Official Robottle |
パーツをトレードする | Trade Parts |
つうしんを きる | Close Connection |
- Practice Robottle: This lets you Robottle your opponent without the winner taking one of the loser's parts. You can try this out as soon as you have 1 working Medarot.
- Official Robottle - This is the "normal" Robottle mode where the winner takes one of the loser's parts after the battle. The part that gets taken is decided by a slot machine type screen called "Robo-Toll" / ロボとーる (see below). You can only select this when both players have 2 or more fully assembled Medarots.
- Trade Parts - This lets you trade parts with the other player. Each player selects a part (equipped parts can't be selected), and it trades them without any confirmation.
- Close Conection - This exits the link menu, saves the changes, and resets the game.
The terrain type for link Robottles is chosen randomly each time, and Medarots don't gain any experience or skill points from participating. You get sent back to the link menu screen when the battle/trade is over, but you won't be able modify which parts you have equipped without exiting the menu.
Robo-Toll[edit]
"Robo-Toll" or ロボとーる (robo-tooru) is a short mini-game after the end of an Official Robottle where the winner randomly selects which kind of part is taken. The possible options are: head, right arm, left arm, legs, Medal, or nothing. The options scroll by quickly and you have to press A to stop the wheel, but given the speed it moves at the results are essentially random.
Notably, Medarots that have had a part or Medal stolen can't be reused immediately in a link Robottle without first exiting the link menu and replacing the missing part/Medal. The "steal nothing" option is annoying, but allows you to have an immediate rematch with the same Medarots if you want. The "steal Medal" option is also the only way to transfer Medals between games in Medarot 1, since they cannot be traded like in later games.
Transforming parts / Medals[edit]
In Medarot 1, some parts/Medals transform into different ones when traded or stolen. (The feature was removed in Medarot 2 and later games.) Most of these parts and Medals are impossible to obtain otherwise, so lots of link battles and trades will be necessary if you intend to collect them all.
The following Medarots' parts will transform when traded:
Original parts | Resulting parts |
---|---|
DonDoguu | → King Pharaoh |
Haniwa Golem | → Samurai |
Kirabbit | → Bunnyheart |
Shell Cushion | → Pure Mermaid |
The original parts can be transferred between games without transforming if you win them via a Robo-Toll. The parts also won't transform when you trade them to a Parts Collection game, but they will if you send them from a Parts Collection to a normal Medarot 1 game.
The following Medals will transform when taken via Robo-Toll:
Original Medal | Resulting Medal | |
---|---|---|
If playing Kabuto | If playing Kuwagata | |
Unicorn Medal | → Tortoise Medal | → Snake Medal |
Ghost Medal | → Jellyfish Medal | → Queen Medal |
Knight Medal | → Bear Medal | → Kraken Medal |
Mermaid Medal | → Spider Medal | → Phoenix Medal |
The Medal it transforms into depends on the version the recipient is playing, which is a little bit ridiculous if you hope to, say, get the Kraken Medal in the Kabuto version. Luckily the Parts Collection games make it possible to obtain all 28 Medals in one game, so stealing them from there is somewhat more feasible.
Emulation issues[edit]
I encountered a couple of issues while battling between two games on the same computer using BGB: One where one of the BGB windows reset in the middle of an Official Robottle / Robo-Toll, leaving the other game window hanging (this happened a few times between two different Medarot 1 Kabuto games), and another where it failed to save the game after I closed the link and exited the emulator, even though the changes appeared to be there after the game reset.
I'm not sure what causes either issue, but it is something that can happen, and it can be pretty annoying if it happens when you just managed to win something good. (You can always try exiting the menu and creating a quick save after the battle if you're worried about it.)
