Medabots AX is a 2D action game released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance. It was the first Medarot action game to be released in America.

Following tradition, it was released in Kabuto (rhinoceros beetle) and Kuwagata (stag beetle) versions, where the player starts with Metabee and Rokusho respectively. The game is actually a modified version of Medarot G specifically to be released to the west, as the western audience was much more familiar with Medarot anime. So the game focuses on characters from Medarot 2 instead of Medarot 5.

Plot

The story focuses on Ikki Tenryou and Metabee/Rokusho on an island participating in a tournament for the final prize. Compared to Medarot G, the game has very little plotting and dialogue.

Continuity and Placement

The game is situated between the events of Medarot 2 and 3, given that Ikki retains Metabee/Rokusho and there's no Medachange feature. It's important to note that this game is exclusive to the West and was never released in Japan. Consequently, the validity of the events in this game within the continuity of primarily Japan-only games remains questionable.

Gameplay

Like Medarot G, Medabots AX has the player control their Medarot directly in real-time battles on a 2D field. The battles are 2 vs. 2, with one Medarot per team designated as the "leader" and the other as the "partner". The player's partner Medarot is AI-controlled. The gameplay is similar to other platform fighting games such as Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers and Digimon Battle Spirit.

The player controls their leader Medarot's movement with the D-pad, and can jump with A and attack with B. Pressing B on its own uses the right arm attack, down + B uses the left arm attack, and up + B uses the head. Similar to the RPG games, each part has a designated cooldown time that has to elapse before the part can be used again. Pressing L makes the Medarot block, and pressing Select uses their Medaforce (which is different depending on the Medal used).

Between battles and before each battle, the player can swap parts on their leader and partner Medarots. The player can also set each Medarot's "strategy panels", which change how the Medarot behaves in-battle. Panels can affect how the AI-controller partner Medarot behaves (for example by telling it to use certain parts or protect the leader) or simply power up the Medarot or make it more likely to hit certain parts. Each Medal has a different set of 30 possible panels, which it gains access to as it levels up. Each Medarot can bring up to 5 panels into a battle. Pressing R in battle switches between the available strategies for your partner.

A battle ends once a leader Medarot's head is destroyed, or after 3 minutes have elapsed. In battles that end with time running out, the team with more parts remaining is considered the winner.
